Medical Minute - 1:29

Steve Williams: The 3WZ Medical Minute is brought to you by Mount Nittany Health. We’re visiting with Dr. Al Zoda from Mount Nittany Health. Dr. Zoda, thanks for joining us.

Dr. Zoda: Thank you very much.

Steve Williams: Let’s talk a little bit about heart attacks. What is a heart attack?

Dr. Zoda: Usually a heart attack occurs when a blood clot forms in an artery and blocks blood flow to the heart muscle. And if it stays closed long enough, it will cause permanent damage.

Steve Williams: What are some of the symptoms of a heart attack?

Dr. Zoda: The most usual symptom is chest pain or chest tightness, but sometimes people will have discomfort in their arms, shoulders, jaw and even their teeth.

Steve Williams: What can you do if you or someone near you is experiencing a heart attack?

Dr. Zoda: The first thing would be to call 911 immediately and have medical attention as soon as possible. If the person is not allergic to aspirin, it is recommended that they take an aspirin tablet while they’re waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

Steve Williams: And where can community members get more information on heart attacks?

Dr. Zoda: Community members can visit mountnittany.org to get more information on heart attacks and the cardiac care available at Mount Nittany Health. For the past five years, we have had a coronary intervention program, and we’ve treated almost 300 patients with acute heart attacks and had very excellent results.

Steve Williams: Dr. Zoda, thank you so much for joining us today. Appreciate it.

Dr. Zoda: You’re very welcome. Thank you.
