Medical Minute—1:39

Dave Kurten: The 3WZ Medical Minute is brought to you by Mount Nittany Health. May is National Stroke Awareness Month and our guest, Dr. Pete Roy, is here to tell us more details on that. Thanks for joining us today.

Dr. Roy: Thank you.

Dave Kurten: Let’s start off with telling everybody, what exactly is a stroke?

Dr. Roy: A stroke occurs when a blood vessel to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. This causes brain cell damage and a loss of function in that area of the brain, producing certain symptoms. Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in America and the leading cause of disability. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds.

Dave Kurten: Can you give our listeners a better idea of stroke symptoms to look for?

Dr. Roy: Symptoms of a stroke include the sudden onset of numbness or weakness on one side of the body including the face, arm or leg. Also, confusion or trouble speaking or comprehending, difficulty seeing, trouble with walking or balance, dizziness, or even a severe headache are symptoms.

Dave Kurten: What should you do if you think you are having a stroke?

Dr. Roy: Call 911 immediately, and get to the nearest hospital. Also, remember the time of the onset of your symptoms as this can help with treatment decisions.

Dave Kurten: Do you have any tips to help prevent a stroke from occurring?

Dr. Roy: You can lower your chance of stroke by treating the risk factors. Control high blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol, quit smoking and limit your alcohol intake. Also, treat any heart or circulatory problems.

Dave Kurten: Where can community members get more information on stroke prevention and treatment?

Dr. Roy: Visit mountnittany.org, or call Mount Nittany Health at 814.234.8800 for the division of neurology.

Dave Kurten: Dr. Pete Roy has been our guest on this edition of the Medical Minute. Thank you for your time.

Dr. Roy: Thank you.

Dave Kurten: The 3WZ Medical Minute is brought to you by Mount Nittany Health.
