Interview with Dr. Shreya Patel on Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

Click here to listen to MP3 file of the interview

Steve Williams: We’re visiting today with Dr. Shreya Patel. Dr. Patel is going to talk a little bit today about minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. Dr. Patel, thanks for joining us today.

Dr. Patel: Thank you.

Steve Williams: Dr. Patel, why would a patient need minimally invasive gynecologic surgery?

Dr. Patel: There are many types of gynecologic procedures that can be done through a minimally invasive approach. Today, our focus will be on discussing operations for hysterectomy. Women may consider a hysterectomy for various medical reasons including abnormal bleeding, chronic pain, uterine fibroids or prolapse, but many fear the complications, scarring and recovery time involved with this procedure.

Steve Williams: Can you talk a little bit about how minimally invasive surgery is used to perform a gynecologic procedure, and what are some of the benefits?

Dr. Patel: First of all, laparoscopic surgery or minimally invasive surgical procedures are performed through small incisions on the abdomen. Through these incisions, a camera and instruments are placed to allow the surgeon to accomplish the procedure while viewing the operative field on video monitors. The benefits are faster recovery time, reduced pain and complications, and better cosmetic outcomes, including smaller incisions. The end result is an easier physical experience, with most patients returning home in less than 24 hours and back to work and other normal activities in about two weeks.

Steve Williams: Mount Nittany Physician Group’s OB/GYN practice now offers the da Vinci surgery, which is robotic surgery. Can you talk a little bit about robotic surgery and how this advanced technology can benefit patients?

Dr. Patel: Again, robotic surgery is designed to help perform complex surgeries using a minimally invasive approach. The same small incisions are made on the abdomen, and cameras and instruments are placed to perform the surgery with robotic assistance. A surgeon sitting at a console a few feet away from the patient is able to view the image of the surgical field from there. The robot replicates the surgeon’s movements in real time, which means it doesn’t make decisions on its own, or move in a certain way without the surgeon’s input. Here at Mount Nittany, myself and my colleagues with the Mount Nittany Physician Group’s OB/GYN practice are using the advanced minimally invasive techniques that are available to treat a variety of gynecologic conditions; however, women preparing to undergo a hysterectomy or other gynecologic procedure should discuss their treatment and recovery goals with their gynecologist, and ask if a minimally invasive surgery is an option for them.

Steve Williams: Where can community members get more information on the minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries available at Mount Nittany?

Dr. Patel: They can visit mountnittany.org or call 814.237.3470 for more information on the gynecologic services provided by Mount Nittany.

Steve Williams: Dr. Shreya Patel – thanks for visiting us today. I appreciate it.

Dr. Patel: Thank you.
